Lewis, Daniel
“FAST PASSING AWAY: Death of Daniel Lewis, a Highly Respected Colored Man”
“‘Uncle’ Daniel Lewis, an old and highly respected colored man, died at “Mt. Pleasant” on Hardware River on Tuesday morning, says the Scottsville Enterprise. ‘Uncle Daniel’ was probably 80 years old and was one of the ‘Old Timers,’ the like of which are fast passing away. He belonged to the late L. B. Barksdale and after slavery was abolished, preferred to remain with his ‘old Marster,’ which he did up to the time that ‘Mt. Pleasants’ was bought by the late William Dorrier. Even then he did not have to give up his old home, as Mr. Dorrier let him remain, taking care of him and allowing him to do about as he pleased. The time is drawing very close when all of these faithful old servants will have passed away.”

Patterson was a model servant. He had the highest respect and regard for the white people he served and the affection was mutual.
“The old man was sitting on one of the stones which are scattered about the yard. He tottered a moment and than [sic] half rose and fell. Doctors McCue and Flannagan used every effort to resuscitate him but the soul had winged its flight and another of those old colored men immortalized in the history of the south was gone from the land he loved and where he was beloved.”
